Children at Bowling Park really LOVE reading! To celebrate this, we have a special ‘We Love Books’ event every year.
This year, all the children and staff dressed up as their favourite book character and enjoyed a special assembly based on ‘Charlie Cook’s Favourite Book’, by Julia Donaldson. Each year group was given an extract from the book, and spent the day exploring, discovering and learning all about their chosen section. Some children had to design and make a ghost out of classroom materials, others had to explore pirate treasure maps and some children even created a Knight’s feast! It was a brilliant day that helped to develop literacy skills in a fun and a creative way.
Here are some photos from this year’s ‘We Love Books’ event and posters from the last two years.

After our local library lost it’s funding, we decided to allow children to borrow books from our school library during the holidays…and so the Bowling Park’s Reading Challenge was born! Each term, children can take part by borrowing books from the library and reading them during the holidays. When the children bring the books back to school they receive a special reading challenge certificate.
The challenges are a great way to encourage children to read at home, and for parents to be involved in their children’s learning. Parents can, if they wish, come along to the library sessions to help their children choose a book!
